Announced on Thursday, private provider DynaLIFE will begin taking over approximately 65% of all provincial lab work in Alberta. A 2019 performance review of Alberta Health Services identified leveraging private laboratory contracts for testing as a way to generate savings. In fact, when comparing similar tests, private providers cost 13% less than the Alberta Health Services subsidiary.
This is just one example of how involving entrepreneurs in the delivery of health care can benefit Albertans—by reducing the drain on the public purse. While a step in the right direction, the Alberta government should consider moving to this model for other services by adopting further, deeper reforms of how health care is delivered.
