The intellectual and political legacy of Friedrich August von Hayek

In 2006, for the first time, the MEI has made available to French readers the condensed version of Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom as it was published in the April 1945 edition of the Reader’s Digest. To celebrate the first anniversary of this publication, the MEI, the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Montreal and the McGill North American Studies’ Association were proud to present a conference with Professor Michael Wohlgemuth, Managing Research Associate at the Walter Eucken Institute in Freiburg, Germany. From 1964 to 1970, F. A. Hayek was a member of the board and from 1970 until his death he was Honorary President of the Walter Eucken Institute. Prof. Michael Wohlgemuth talked about the intellectual and political legacy of Friedrich August von Hayek. He will present certain aspects of the foundations of Hayekian liberalism and argued that some of today’s political entrepreneurs promoting open markets are in fact carrying Hayek’s torch.
