The MEI would like to honour the passing of Peter Munk
Montreal, March 29, 2018 – It is with great sadness that the MEI received the news of the passing of entrepreneur and philanthropist Peter Munk.
Mr. Munk, who founded Barrick Gold and turned it into one of the greatest mining successes in the world, was a model entrepreneur, an engaged citizen, and a generous donor. He was also a friend of the Institute.
In addition to contributing to the development of the Canadian economy and providing jobs for thousands of Canadians, Mr. Munk never hesitated to share the fruits of his success through his philanthropic activities, whether in support of education, health care, or better public policies.
He also had a real understanding of and a profound love for the ideas and values that underpin a free and prosperous society. We will remember his unwavering commitment to economic freedom and his support of democratic values and responsible citizenship.
“Mr. Munk and his friend and advisor George Jonas, who is also no longer with us, were among the MEI’s most loyal and generous supporters. We would not be where we are today if not for them,” said Michel Kelly-Gagnon, President and CEO of the MEI. “I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Munk’s family.”
