The Montreal Economic Institute awards the John Dobson Medal for Free Enterprise to Jean-Paul Gagné

Montreal, September 25, 2014 – On the occasion of its annual George Lengvari Sr. Lecture Series gala event, the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) awarded the John Dobson Medal for Free Enterprise, a prize created in 2014, to Mr. Jean-Paul Gagné.

“As Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, and Publisher Emeritus of the weekly business newspaper Les Affaires for a quarter of a century, Jean-Paul Gagné has played a leading role in contributing to public policy debates in Quebec. I am very happy to pay homage to him on behalf of the MEI. Our society needs more public figures as consistent and intellectually rigorous as he has been,” says Michel Kelly-Gagnon, President and CEO of the MEI.

Named in honour of the late John Dobson, Canada’s legendary investor and enthusiastic supporter of the virtues of entrepreneurship, the John Dobson Medal for Free Enterprise is awarded to an outstanding individual who, throughout his or her career as a writer and public figure, has inspired a fuller understanding and an improved appreciation of the value of the free enterprise economic system.

“The free enterprise system that has flourished since the start of the Industrial Revolution has contributed to a vast increase in human prosperity. Unfortunately, its merits remain poorly understood, and its detractors great in number. It is therefore essential to highlight the work of those who endeavour to help others appreciate its true value,” concludes Michel Kelly-Gagnon.

The John Dobson Medal for Free Enterprise is awarded once a year by the MEI. Potential recipients include among others editorialists, columnists, professors and think tank leaders who have been prominent public intellectuals for a significant amount of time, from a pro-liberty and individual responsibility perspective. The Medal is awarded not for specific articles or books, but in recognition of an entire body of work.

The Montreal Economic Institute is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit research and educational organization. Through its studies and its conferences, the MEI stimulates debate on public policies in Quebec and across Canada by proposing wealth-creating reforms based on market mechanisms.
