Hélène Desmarais is named chairman of the Montreal Economic Institute

Montreal, April 3, 2007 – The Montreal Economic Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Hélène Desmarais as chairman of its board of directors. She succeeds Adrien Pouliot, who has guided the progress of the Institute since it began its activities in 1999. Ms. Desmarais is an experienced leader who, among her other positions, is chairman and CEO of the Centre d’Entreprises et d’Innovation de Montréal, Canada’s largest incubator of technology companies.

Ms. Desmarais chairs several other boards, including those of the Société de développement économique Ville-Marie and the Société d’investissement jeunesse. She became the first woman to serve as chairman of the board of HEC Montréal. She also heads the advisory boards of the faculty of medicine of the University of Montreal and of the Conference of Montreal. She will also chair, starting in the fall of 2007, the board of directors of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

The Montreal Economic Institute is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit body that takes part in public policy debate in Quebec and across Canada, offering wealth creation solutions on matters of taxation, regulation, and reform of health and education systems. Its publications since 2000 have included the Report Card on Quebec’s Secondary Schools. In 2004 it won a Templeton Freedom Award for Institute Excellence for the quality of its management and public relations.
